Acknowledgement of County

The Connection Arts Space Gallery is located at 1 Walker Street, Dandenong, on the unceded lands of the Woi-wurrung and Boon Wurrung peoples.

We acknowledge and pay respect to the Traditional Custodians and Elders – past, present and emerging, of the Kulin Nation on which we connect and create.

Connection Arts Space recognises Aboriginal connection to material and creative practice on these lands for more than 60,000 years and First Nation peoples’ enduring presence and knowledge.

When our founding member, Mehdi Jaghuri (MJ), moved from Afghanistan to Australia at age 14,  art was a tool to gain confidence, connect with others and share his experience of seeking refuge.

MJ’s idea – to start a gallery that could provide the community with greater access to art – was made a reality when C.A.S opened in November 2015 with the help of fellow artists and friends: Andrew Duong, Genevieve Townsend, Mo Chamas, Michelle Clarke, Tahlia Megele, Daniel Kerrison, Shariff Muidul and many others.

In our first year, organisations and schools approached us wanting to run workshops and other projects. We also connected with many artists and art-loving people who became volunteers or participants in our projects. CAS has since flourished to become the multifaceted community-focused arts organisation that it is today.
