Finding joy in being yourself through art
– with Oladimeji Coker
Oladimeji ‘Dimeji’ Coker is a documentary photographer from Nigeria, currently based in Australia. His black and white photographs usually revolve around the same topics: culture, people, traditions, inclusion and identity. His artistic work is therefore a never-ending essay of how he sees these topics being acted out right before him.
In this session, Dimeji focuses on identity as a critical part of being an artist. We need to feel comfortable with our identity in order to effectively and authentically express our ideas and ourselves through our work.
Get to know Oladimeji Coker
I would love to dedicate a year or more to exploring the lives of people who have recently moved from their country of origin either for economic or refugee reasons. I am particularly interested in their struggles to balance the culture and traditions of their origin with the new society. I would like to know how long it takes them to reach a point where they let go of all they previously held true and why they have decided to let go.
